Viharn Phra Mongkol
Next to Wat Phra Si Sanphet is a building housing a large Bronze Buddha statue. The statue was moved to its current location after a lightning bolt destroyed the top of it's original Mondop, however, the current building is not the original, which was damaged by fire during the 2nd invasion of Ayutthaya by the Burmese. Unfortunately the current building is not as ornate as its predecessors, it is still a suitable home to the statue, which was transferred here from the former royal palace.
Vihard Phra Mongkol attracts visitors and devotees alike and a visit is memorable as the bronze Buddha is one of the largest in Thailand and the mother of pearl eyes leave a lasting impression. When it was last moved a large number of small Buddha statuettes were found in a hollow left by centuries of visitors. A visit to Viharn Phra Mongkol is not to be missed while in Ayutthaya.
