Giant Swing

The Giant Swing has a long history in Bangkok, dating back to 1784, when it was constructed under the rule of the original King Rama I. It has been renovated several times since, due to weather wear and tear. The swing is about 20meters tall, and was historically used for a ceremony called Tri-yampawai, where contestants attempt to grab a bag of gold coins from one of the swing pillars. The ceremony has been discontinued since 1935 though due to several fatal accidents. Now the swing represents a national monument and is formally known as Sao Ching Cha.
