Bangkok Victory Monument
The Victory Monument in Bangkok, is perhaps one if its most recognisable features - a tall spike located in the middle of a busy intersection just to the north of Siam Square. The monument is now even more famous due to its own BTS Sky Train Station called Victory Monument. The victory in question was a rather short affair against the French colonial authorities in December 1940 and January 1941. The fighting was actually inconclusive (59 Thai soldiers were killed), but Japan brokered peace which lead to Thailand gain territories from Laos and Cambodia - a victory worth building a monument over? Japan wanted peace between 2 of its key allies in the build up to their own planned conquest. Ironically the territories gained in the victory were later lost in 1945 after the 2nd world war. Part of the design was conducted by Corrado Feroci who was also responsible for Democracy Monument. Today, the monument serves as a stand out landmark.
