Wat Phra Kaew

Wat Phra Kaew is perhaps one of Bangkok's key attractions - it's also known as the temple of the Emerald Buddha. The key feature therefore is the Statue of the Emerald Buddha, one of the central, stunning pieces of Thailand's Buddhist religion. One of the entrances to the temple is reserved solely for the king, who is responsible for tending to the statue of the Emerald Buddha. The Emerald Buddha has a long history, believed to have originated in India, it has been a revered symbol at times in Thailand, Burma and Laos. For a while it was a feature in Chiang Mai (during its history has the capital), later it was taken by the Burmese, before spending some time in Luang Prabang, Laos, and the later transfered to the Laos capital Vientiane. It has resided in its current location for some time - a focal point of the Royal Palace in Bangkok.

The key feature of Wat Phra Kaew is the hall of the Emerald Buddha, which is the large building to the south of the complex. The complex is defending by statues of giants, and has plenty more to offer, including gilded Stupas. Remember to wear long sleeves and long trousers in respect of the temple.
