North East Thailand
North East Thailand is often referred to as Isaan, the region surrounded by Laos and Cambodia. The region doesn't have a coastline, so there is no beach to attract the sunworshiping tourist. Nor does it have the history or culture of Chiang Mai. There is little in the way of activities to attract visitors, and this is perhaps one of the most appealing features of Isaan.
Oftentimes you will meet people from Isaan working in bars, driving Tuktuks attracted away from the province by the potential of the capital, because Isaan is one of the poorer parts of Thailand. And it is that which perhaps provides its charm and appeal - it is the perfect place to get off the beaten track and experience rural and untouched Thailand.

Attractions
The culture in Isaan is highly influenced by its neighbour Laos - the traditional food consists of sticky rice, and spicy Som Tam salad. (The food is spicy!). Nong Khai being close to the border, offers a gateway into Laos. The main city 'destinations' in Isaan are Khon Kaen, Buriram, Udon Thani, Roi Et, Surin and Khorat, each of which offer their own sleepy view of Isaan's charms.
