Memorial Bridge

The memorial bridge is a key crossing over the Pai river on the way from Chiang Mai. The bridge has been an important line of communication for centuries since a bridge was originally placed there during the War. In a similar way to in Kanchanaburi (the bridge over the river Kwai), the bridge over the river Pai (!) was built by Japanese invaders as a key access route into Burma. Unfortunately the original bridge has since been destroyed by flooding, but given the importance of the connection a bridge was transported from Chiang Mai. Now the old iron bridge is a tourist attraction running parallel to a modern concrete bridge.
