Sukhothai

Sukhothai is the former capital of the Sukhothai kingdom, which most historians point towards being the foundation of Thai history. It was the capital from 1238 until 1419, during which the city prospered as a major trading route for South East Asia. As the city's wealth grew, it built a spectacular city with splendid golden palaces and temples.

The city was ruled for many years by Ramkhampaeng (the great), who is still celebrated today. As well as expanding the kingdom he is also widely credited with developing the Thai language, and it's script. No matter what, his rule is widely celebrated and a memorial to him is a key feature in the historical park (located around 12km to the west of the new town.

The city eventually fell under a Burmese invasion where much of the city was destroyed. What remains today is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site with the memorable remains of many temples and palaces. Notably Wat Si Chum, just to the north of the main historical park is well worth a visit. Wat Mahathat is the main palace in the centre of the moat, while Wat Si Sawai has a unique Khmer style.
